What Is Spirituality ?
Some of my clients and friends have been asking me this question lately. And I think it is one of the most fundamental questions we can ask ourselves.
I started my inner quest because I felt profoundly disconnected and I was in constant suffering. I numbed my emotions with food and alcohol, and followed the conventional path because it was the only solution I had.
Yet, about 4 years ago, I signed up for my first meditation retreat in Myanmar. During 7 days, I felt inner peace for the first time in my life and I connected to something bigger than myself. My life finally had some meaning to it, and I felt like I had returned home.
But learning to be spiritual in my everyday life was a totally different challenge for me. Not everyone has the luxury of isolating themselves from the world to meditate, nor do they have the will to do so.
It took me several more years of practice and experimentation to find out what balance worked for me. At some point, I was meditating at least 2 hours a day, and waking up around 4 AM. Now, spirituality occupies every aspect of my life, from eating, to sleeping and interacting with others.
When I sit down to meditate every morning, I do so to remember the deeper truths of spirit that lie within me. These gems are hidden beneath layers and layers of fears and conditioning. And yes, sometimes, it is painful and I want to stop. But the path of truth is the path of the inner warrior.
So now, when I am asked what spirituality means to me, I have some answers to give. Spirituality doesn't belong to any sect, religion, or organization. I don't believe you need somebody outside of you to tell you what God wants for you.
No spirituality is the Source that exists inside of all of us. It is the loving Universe that cares for us and wants us to awaken to higher levels of consciousness. It is our soul wanting to evolve to higher planes, to feel more joy and love, and be free from our deepest fears.
Spirituality is something we all get to experience in our own ways. It can be simple as meditating in silence or taking a walking in nature.
In a world divorced from the soul, I have found it is very hard to find meaning or a deeper purpose in living. Yet, once we understand these deeper truths on a personal level, we start to feel that life has something much grander to offer us.
Spirituality is my daily connection to the higher Source that wants my good. It is the way I move, sleep, eat and meditate. It is how I pray for help when I am afraid. It is the support and love I receive from all beings.
Now more than ever before, we have to remember that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Our essence exists as souls but we have forgotten our true nature as we incarnated on this Earth.
A new world is emerging out of the darkness.
A world, where spirituality is the way of living.
A world, where we feel connected to this Source within ourselves.
But we all have a role to play in this awakening.
And it is time for us to remember.
