Trust and Surrender

For a long time, I was very confused by the words an Indian guru had told me. I had asked for advice on how to live my life, and she answered that I needed to learn to surrender. To have no plans at all, no fixed role.

I still probably haven’t fully understood the meaning of this, but I feel like I’ve made some progress.

When I left for India at the beginning of this year, these words were on the back of my mind. When I created my company and started coaching they were there again.

What’s the deeper meaning behind these simple words - trust and surrender?

In essence, it means you trust that there is something bigger than yourself out there. You accept that you do not control everything in your life and that there are some other forces, much bigger than you, that are at play.

It takes a lot of work on your ego to get to a stage where you can fully accept that. We all want to believe that we control the way our lives unfold. I believe that it is true to some degree, we all have some kind of responsibility in our lives.

But life is much bigger than ourselves. We are not individuals detached from the whole, although we’ve led ourselves to believe it. No, in reality, we are all part of the same whole. And we all have a very specific role we are here to play.

How do we find that role and more importantly, how do we take the leap? Well, I guess you know the answer by now. Trust and surrender.

Trusting and surrendering are at the core of the spiritual path. They mean you accept the flow of life and the role you are here to play.

It takes a whole lot of confidence because our world has become very detached from spiritual ideas. Some of you reading this will completely reject the idea of surrendering. I know I did when I first heard this.

Because saying you trust and surrender means that you move out of your own way. It’s a death of your ego.

In order for you to embrace a higher self, one that involves more than just yourself, you have to create a bigger container.

An important step forward is having faith. Without faith, no one can surrender to the role they are here to play. There’s a quote I love that says: “Leap and the net will appear”. I think it summarizes this pretty well.

It is impossible to know what will happen when you leap, but there is a good chance that providence will come rushing your way. There is some kind of magic behind this act of courage.

Love is the heartbeat of courage and surrendering is an act of love. Without it, there is very little chance you will be able to make that leap.

Love seems quite abstract, we equate it to a feeling we have from time to time. But love is understanding we are not a detached part of the universe. That like everything, we are connected together.

Surrendering means your love cannot be contained to yourself anymore, that it needs to spread out. When you actually decide to surrender, you are doing it for the good of others.

At least this has been my personal experience of this spiritual truth. But I am still learning with every step I take.

What about you?

Do you feel an urge to trust and surrender?

And are you ready to take that leap?
