Gratitude Is Underrated
Gratitude holds so much power to help us overcome the times we are going through. Yet, it is deeply underrated.
Gratitude is the art of appreciating what we already have in life. It is recognizing that where we are is just fine, that we do not need to go anywhere else.
In a period of fear and change, gratitude is like a superpower. It is what helps you see the light in the shadows. It is what gives you hope for the day to come.
All days have their own beauty to them but we fail to realize that. Instead, we focus our attention on the negative. And the media is a good perpetrator of this cycle of negative emotions that we are feeling.
However, gratitude is the exact opposite. You teach yourself to focus on what is good in your life, all the little gifts that you already have. And yes, often these gifts can be as mundane as a walk in nature or some heat in your apartment.
We live in a society where consumerism dictates our behavior. We are always seeking for more. And this does not only apply to the material sphere. I know many people (including me) who are spiritual consumers. They are always trying to get more spiritual experiences in a desire to grow.
But the problem is twofold. One, what drives this desire is dangerous because you will always be seeking for more. Two, you are not happy with who you are or what you have right now.
I fell deep down this rabbit hole with personal development — trying to change everything about myself without appreciating who I already was.
Gratitude has the power of bringing us back to the present, no matter how dark it may be. It is capable of shifting your mindset with a few lines in a journal every day.
Because what happens is that this gratitude lives on for the rest of your day. You start seeing things differently in your everyday life. You appreciate small mundane moments with a new light.
With this new perspective, you have the possibility of being content. Sure, the world is not the way you would want it to be. But what if you shined a light on all the good that is already here?
Maybe this is blind hope, but I believe this tool can change a life. Because we are always looking to escape the moment we are in, who we are, in search of more.
So in a period of disasters, death, and unprecedented change, is it wishful thinking to practice gratitude? Perhaps. But I believe, it is actually now more than ever that we need to practice it.
There is so much negativity in the air. Yet, the more we are able to be grateful for all we already have, the more we can bring forth the mindset that will bring us out of chaos.
The world of tomorrow doesn’t need to be filled with darkness. Today doesn’t need to be another shitty day.
So here’s to appreciating where we are right now and what we are blessed with in life.
Lots of love to you all,
Thank you.
